Resilience

“RESILIENCE” – NZ$2800.00

As the Poppies rose from the ashes of the battlefields after the war with great beauty and resilience so too, we as a people, shall rise after Covid-19 and the events of 2020.

ABOUT THE PIECE

Inspired by ANZAC day 2020 and with New Zealand under level IV lockdown, I created this piece to celebrate the way that Kiwi’s were dealing with adversity and the resilience of the human spirit.

Made from a piece of freshly cut Paper Birch trunk, the work was turned on the lathe, pierced, carved, painted with Indian Ink, sanded back, painted with acrylic and sanded again and again and again as multiple layers of ink was applied and sanded back to get the grey effect of the ash on the battlefields.

More than 60 hours of work this is a magnificently delicate and detailed piece.

The piece is so fragile and detailed that several of the finer pieces broke loose as the piece dried and formed its organic shape. I chose to either leave them out or to glue them together where form would be lost. As with war, injuries are healed, broken bones set and pieces of ourselves lost. So too with this work of art.

I served in the military for 6 years and the Police for 16 years so the ANZAC day celebrations hold a special place in my heart.

The journey of creation

From a block of freshly cut Paper Birch to an incredibly delicate and detailed sculptured vase, this is the process of creating “Resilience”.

The wood was freshly cut and green / wet turned. Once it dried it formed a lovely organic shape.

This was then pierced, carved, dyed and painted with acrylic using the dry-brush technique.
