How to sharpen your Tungsten Carbide Cutting Wheels?
While the cutting wheels are by far the best on the market and retain their edge for a very, very long time, eventually you would have rotated it across all 360 degrees and will need to resharpen the wheel. This is super easy and you can view the YouTube video Rolly and I made using this link (Video being edited, please be patient).
Steps to sharpen your Tungsten Carbide Cutting Wheel:
- Carefully remove the cut limiter if your tool uses one and place to one side. I recommend a magnetised bowl for this, I have them all over my workshop to safely store little screws, cutter head and so on.
- Remove the cutting wheel and screw it onto the correct size cutting dowel.
- Mark the top edge of the cutting wheel with a permanent marker all the way around.
- Fit the cutting dowel into the chuck of your portable drill.
- Wet your diamond sharpening disc (use this link to buy the discs we use) with a light spray of water.
- Run your lathe at no more than 500 rpm.
- Very gently apply the edge of the cutting wheel to the diamond cutting wheel while your drill is running.
- Start from the back side / bottom side of your cutting wheel and very carefully decrease the angle. You will see the marking of the permanent marker slowly disappear until you have sharpened the actual bevel of the cutting wheel.
- It only take a few seconds and required a very light touch. Do not decrease the angle between the cutting wheel and diamond sharpener too much or you will grind away the actual cutting edge.
- To check the sharpness of the cutting wheel very gently pull the back of your fingernail across the cutting edge. If the cutting wheel is sharp it will produce a little shaving of your fingernail.
- Stop your lathe.
- Remove your dowel from your drill.
- Remove the cutting wheel and fit it to your tool.
- Replace the cutting depth limiter if applicable.
- Proceed to make clean, smooth cuts and turn beautiful things on your lathe with your Munro tool.
