There are moments in my workshop in Carcassonne when a piece of wood reveals a form I could never have planned. This winged bowl, Ailes, is one of those moments. Turned from the delicate crotch intersection of a cherry tree, it carries the quiet memory of spring—the soft blush of cherry blossoms, the branching lines of new growth, and the gentle lift of wings ready to take flight.
Cherry is not a rare timber, but it has a warmth and subtlety that I’ve always loved working with. The crotch section, where two limbs meet, produces feathered grain patterns that feel almost like movement frozen in time. As I shaped this bowl, those natural curves guided my hands, encouraging a form that honours the tree’s original gesture. The thin wing-like extensions emerged naturally from the wood’s architecture, giving the piece a sense of lightness that belies its strength.
I turned this bowl green, straight from freshly cut cherry. At just around 3mm thick, it dried into an organic, gently undulating shape—something only possible when working with living, breathing timber. This is the kind of artistic woodturning I learned to appreciate at École Escoulen: letting the material speak, letting the form evolve, and embracing the natural movement of wood as part of the final sculpture.
Finished with La Popote, the surface retains its soft, tactile feel. You’ll notice the rosy undertones, the subtle shifts in colour, and the delicate grain that catches the light. It’s a handmade wooden object meant to be held, used, and enjoyed—whether as a serving bowl, a decorative woodturned art piece, or simply as a quiet companion in your home.
